A MESSAGE: 25 FEBRUARY 2002

Columbian presidential candidate and leader of the Greens Party, Ingrid

Betancourt, was kidnapped yesterday, sending shockwaves around the world Greens political network.

Ms Betancourt received a standing ovation at last April's Global Greens Conference in Canberra for a speech about her nation's injustices and the danger she faced in standing for president. Subject to numerous death threats, she had been forced to send her children overseas.

ENVIRONMENT CENTRE VIDEOPHILIA

The Environment Centre is now the owner, thanks to a grant, of a digital video camera and computer with editing software. We bought it because we knew we could use it to help us educate and inform the community about environmental and social issues. We can make a video about any topic that needs airing and show it at CEC film nights, pass it on to other groups, or even send it to TV networks.

In the absence of experts, deciding what camera to buy was a major feat. Understanding how to use it is even more of a challenge. Astonishingly, some of our members are already producing excellent footage and asking the right questions of the software. Some people are hatching ideas for topics. We are thinking about arranging for video production lessons for a group of us – is anyone interested? Would you like to get involved in video production with the CEC? Contact the Centre.
