The low winter sun is allowed in for heat and light, while the higher summer sun is blocked by the overhang. Normally the overhang is positioned to start letting in sunlight on the autumn equinox (21st March) and completely block it again on the spring equinox (21st Sep). Due to the orientation of the Emporium, the skylight faces a bit east of north, so the morning sun will come in a bit past the equinox and the late afternoon sun will be shaded out a bit before the equinox, which is also quite desirable. A vent at the top of the windows allows hot air to escape in summer, and curtains or blinds will be added as required to diffuse the sunlight and protect the library books from UV damage. The CEC contributed towards the skylight to raise awareness of retrofitting old buildings to make them more energy efficient in heating and lighting as well as a pleasure to be in. Emporium customers are impressed already and we intend to publicise it when completely finished.
