DON’T GET CAUGHT BY JOHN HOWARD’S ANTI-DEMOCRATIC LEGISLATION - ENROL TO VOTE NOW!
The Howard Government amended the Electoral Act this year to narrow your opportunity to vote. In the past, people have had one week to enrol to vote after an election is called. This gave young people, new citizens and voters who had changed their address a fair chance to get onto the electoral roll. Under Howard’s amendment, the rolls will effectively close at 8pm the same day the election is called. In 2004, in the week the election was called, 80,000 people enrolled to vote for the first time while 30,000 changed their details.
Howard must be worried that young people won’t vote for him. So . . . if you’ve just turned 18 or if you know someone who has just turned 18, beat Howard at his anti-democratic game, and get enrolled now, before it’s too late. If you’ve moved house and not changed your address, you can slip off the electoral roll. Check that you are still enrolled. These changes also apply to State elections, as the electoral rolls are administered under a State-Federal agreement.
The State election is on March 24 2007.
