TAWNY FROGMOUTH SPEAKS OUT Dear Sir
I don't know about anyone else, but I've really had a gutful of
those brazen law-
breakers down river. Just last week in West Yamba a gang of them went on a
rampage, running riot with a bulldozer and laying waste to a very old melaleuca
forest. They even cleared mangroves from a creek bank. Don't they have anything
more constructive to do than hang around hoping their land will get developed and
vandalising any vegetation which they fear might spoil their chances? These people
make me sick. I suppose the blame lies with their parents and teachers. Weren't they
taught that there are laws against clearing vegetation? Do they think that throwing a
tantrum and cutting down trees will result in them getting their own way? In my day
we would've got a kick up the back-side. This anti-social behaviour has to stop. I fear
for the trees up here. Those hooligans in their white shoes can be very threatening,
you know. You can't have these gangs roaming about clearing vegetation and spoiling
the habitat of other species who just want to live a quiet life on our beautiful North
Coast. This isn't the first time a developer has cleared vegetation in order to destroy
any environmental hindrances to their land rezoning. It's time they stopped getting
away with it. They've been thumbing their noses at the law for too long. I suppose it's
a policing problem. They really should be shown they can't get away with it. And if
the authorities refuse to enforcing the law and keep turning a blind eye, I'll be off to
my local member to see about taking matters into our own hands.
